Q&A: Any help with DIV tag web page layouts?

Question by riggers: Any help with DIV tag web page layouts?
Hello everyone.

I wondered if you’ll could help me out?
I’ve created a web page using DIV tags, and styled most of it using CSS. All has gone well and I’m now ready to begin work on the second page.

On my first page, I’ve structured the DIVS with selectors like so,

#header

id=”header”

#subheader

id=”subheader”

#horizontallinkbar

id=”horizontallinbar”

#mainbody

id=”mainbody”

#sidebar

id=”sidebar”

#footer

id=”footer”

These are all structured independently of each other.

On the second page, I’ll keep all the elements the same, except the #main body, which i need the height to be bigger. (I assume I have apply a different ID for this?)

So i opened up my new page, layed out a new set of DIVS, attached a set of ID’s (the same id’s as mentioned, except the main body) and finally, attached my style sheet……

……Bingo! all of the DIVS suddenly took on the form of the first page, colours, and sizes. Excellent I thought. The only problem is, when I create a new DIV for the second page #main body, with a different ID and preview it in FF, it floats to the left hand side, even though I set the margin to “auto” I can’t figure this out!

I’m assuming that in each new page, where I want multiple elements to be exactly the same as the previous pages, I just apply an identical ID to each of them, and then by attaching style sheet to that page, the elements will be the same? And like wise, if I want one particular element to be different, or unique, I just give it a unique ID?

But why would this effect the positiong?

This address is the main page, and if you click on the link at the top of the page, which in white, reads: “history” from there, you’ll see my problem. (viewed in FF) But, renders ok in IE8 (compatability view)

I don’t get it? The index page looks fine in ALL browsers though!

I really appreciate any help, and patience for reading all this!

You wouldn’t put your ID in the middle of your div tags, you put them in as a propertry of the tag itself.

Any way to create a script that injects code into an HTML page?

Question by David R: Any way to create a script that injects code into an HTML page?
I’ve learned xhtml, CSS, Javascript, and Java (fairly)… I’m designing a Java program to help me update the news section on my website by spitting out the html code. Is there a way to design a program that could access my news.php file on the web server and change the html code (and inject the code at the right place) at a click of the button?

TITLE – DATE

The program will spit this code out and fill in the variables according to what I specify in the text fields with the “Generate HTML Code” button. Now, I want to be able to click another button (or maybe run some type of a script) that injects this code into the HTML file just before the last code that was injected.

Any ideas as to where to start?

Additional information: I have tried setting our page up as a blog; after many attempts, I’ve come to the conclusion that my host is missing something (or has something turned off) that blogs need in order to work, as they were all buggy upon fresh installations. (I couldn’t even access the admin panel in WordPress! I’d get a white screen.)

You probably could do with looking at template engines ( http://java-source.net/open-source/template-engines ). They tend to be more a programmatic thing – some in Java, but they have the idea of replacing tokens with content.
