I have a liberal arts background, and never really studied higher mathematics or computer science. However, I have got into designing basic websites for people lately, using Dreamweaver and some other WYSIWYG programs. How do I get my head around programming languages like PHP, though?

I’ve taken a lot of time to learn Xhtml and CSS, but the site I want to build requires me to update the content frequently. I want the freedom to code the site exactly as I want it and avoid the "template look," so to speak. I’d also like to employ some light javascript for menus and minor interactive content, but I don’t know how to write javascript.

What is my best bet?
