Here I will run through which  internet marketing software tools that we need to build websites. These tools are often free but some inevitably cost money.

Our goals will dictate what tools we need. Actually, there are some online alternatives for the tools but it make sense to be aware of what tools are worth using that run on your PC/MAC.

For a serious approach, I think we all want to own our own websites so this will entail uploading files to the web. For this we should ideally use an FTP client. For this I use FileZilla which surprisingly is free but does everything you require for file manipulation between a computer and a web server.

With this software, you can drag and drop files between folders in any of the two windows ( your hard drive or the web server). Also, right-clicking on the server folders and files allows you to adjust the file permissions that determine who can do what with each file such as view it in a web browser or not.

But, for bulk file wipes I find it a lot faster to do this from the file manager in my web hosting panel.

Next, you are likely to want to edit text files such as templates, config.files etc. For this I suggest NotePad++ which is also free but very effective with tabbed edit windows that you can reposition and includes syntax highlighting.  I also use this for HTML/PHP editing.

To test website ideas, scripts and plugins on your computer, a great solution is Xampp which makes it very easy to set up a web server on your computer for development purposes. This avoids you having to keep uploading files to your live site to test things.

To build web pages, you may want to use a What You See is What You Get (WYSIWYG)  editor. This helps you create HTML pages in a visual environment. Several ones to consider are: XSite Pro, DreamWeaver, and  NVU. For html only, think about HTML Kit or NotePad++.

does anyone have any good html pages for a websites index that you can use if you hack it.
i have root on my school server, and i want to change the main page that politely informs them of their errors but also looks cool with like moving writing, so the kids have somehthing to laugh at.
before you ask i havent had that much time to learn html properly, i just have basic needed knoledge

silly idea. some schools can make you a lot of problems, especially if the guy, who’s responsible for the websites, feels embarrassed.

besides, getting root on a school server is usually really nothing to be very proud of. and if you are unable to create a simple web page, then i guess even my grandma would get root on your school server.

so do yourself a favour, don’t follow that silly idea and just tell the guy who’s in charge how he can make his server more secure.

I made a site with Dreamweaver that has frames and within those frames I have different html pages that load into them. I came across an extension once which I believe prevented those pages from coming up in Google searches but cannot relocate it. These pages are just bare text and should not be accessed by themselves.

Google will index any page that is linked to by another page. If you want to prevent this, one solution is to add a rel="nofollow" attribute to your anchor tag. For example,

<a href="/stayout/plain.html" rel="nofollow">

Alternatively (and a more universal solution), you can add the path to those pages to a robots.txt file so that search crawlers won’t index them. For more info on how to create a robots.txt file, here’s one resource. There are many more on the web.

Our company had another business here in town create our website, but they are no longer in business. We want to update our site, but how do I go about doing that without having the original file(s) on our computer? I know the ftp site, but that’s about all!

Any help at all would be great!

It’s quite an easy task. – But admittedly, it can be quite daunting if your not really into all that.

You need a program that you can access your FTP with, something like CuteFTP is perfect. Alternatively, use dreamweaver’s FTP settings.

Once you have the sites FTP details (Username + password) you will need to download the whole site onto your computers. (when I say whole site, i mean everything that resides in what is usually called the ‘public’ folder. Or sometimes ‘content’.

Once you have that, you can made the changes to the html pages, and then replace your new pages over their older counterparts.

I have a DreamHost.com account. Where do I go to update the text of my index.html and all other pages? I do not have anything fancy like databases. I put something up when I first got it, but I can’t figure it out now. :S Thanks.

First see if you can login to your control panel:

https://panel.dreamhost.com/

There will be a default FTP user set up, and you can change the password to gain access to your site files for editing.

There is also a webFTP program available through the control panel. It is somewhat limited as to the file size you can upload, but usually works well for HTML and images files. It has an editor with which you can alter files on the server.

Once you are in the control panel, you will see links to the extensive documentation.

I have a html form with two drop down boxes with the options ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ in each. When submitted, i want the form to direct the user to one page if both responses are yes, and another page if either response is no. Can anyone give me some very simple guidelines on how to do this, or where i could find a nice tutorial about it?

I know html very well and trying to learn another script. I know javascript goes great with html as i have used pre-made scripts before in my sites.

Php im having trouble with embedding properly to show php with html

JavaScript is great for user interactivity.

PHP is more for server-side interaction, which is useful with forms and such. Also, you need to have PHP installed on your computer before you can use it in html pages.

XML is mainly used for information; it’s not used all that much in terms of displaying things in HTML.

I’d recommend CSS as well (though not technically a scripting language), as it gives you richer content in terms of design.
