Let’s say I have a normal folder with the ‘index’ file. Then in that folder I got a folder named example ‘Band’. And in Band I got a html document. How do I make a link back to the index in the previous folder?

Use "../" (without quotes) to send browsers up one directory. Use as many times with folder names to get the right relative path. Basically…

when i make my webpage in dreamweaver cs3, is just the main page called index.html?

index.htm[l] is a default page that will be fetched by the server if the user accesses the site/dir without specifying file name
I.e. http://yourSite/yourDir/ and http://yourSite/yourDir/index.html will fetch the same file, the idea is that you have ONE index.htm[l] file per directory…
The rest of the pages can be called anything you like them to be called…

I installed wordpress into a folder called ‘wordpress’, and developed it there. Now I am wanting to move it to the main index, so that when people visit my website they will automatically go to my installed wordpress.

Do I have to delete all of my old pages?
Will I need to update any of my wordpress files to the new URL?

what is the function of the index.html file of a web site?

This is the default starting page for any site. If u do not specify anything in the directory, it will open this page. It is a good practice to keep the very first page name as index.html

I programmed a php file but I need to be be opened or to be displayed automatically without copying the content of the php to the index.html….

What syntax will I insert to the index.html because most index.html upn opening a browser to that directory it automatically read the index.html not the desired file.php.

Doing this is just simple. Create you PHP page and set it ready so that the setup could be cooked anytime you want. So be ready with your home page now. Then note down the link to the PHP page. Then copy the following code into your index.html file.

This video shows you how to make Apache look for an index.php file instead of an index.html file. A lot of sites do use an html file for their index, but in my case I’m using Drupal which uses PHP. Every time I would go to the address without index.php on the end, it would show a directory listing. And the way Drupal works, when you try to do something, it just adds the string to the end of the URL, like http://localhost/?q=node instead of http://localhost/index.php?q=node. Every time that happened I got a 404 not found error. In this video I will show you how to correct it and make Apache look for index.php instead of index.html.
